Beware of Scammers

Posted: October 8, 2021

Our office is once again being inundated with members reporting calls from would-be scammers demanding money and threatening to disconnect power if they don’t pay up quickly. Several things jump out about these calls that should be a red flag for members. First, we never call and demand payment. Second, when member accounts are past due, we give ample warning that disconnection may be possible. A sense of immediate urgency, such as a demand for payment within a period of minutes in lieu of disconnection should be another clue that you are probably dealing with a scammer. Finally, the Cooperative will never ask for your credit, debit or bank account information over the phone. All member payments are taken via our interactive voice response system or one of our online or mobile options.

The most important action you can take if you receive one of these calls is to hang up and do not give out any information. If you have questions about your account, or if you suspect you may have been the target of a scam, call MEC at 406.541.4433 to check the status of your account.
