Lower Fuel & Maintenance Costs
EVs cost less per mile to operate than gasoline-powered vehicles. With fewer moving parts, they also require less maintenance—no oil changes, spark plugs, or exhaust systems.
Clean, Quiet, and Efficient
Electric motors produce zero tailpipe emissions, helping keep our Montana air clean. They run quietly and deliver instant torque for a smooth, responsive driving experience.
Reliable Performance in Montana Weather
Modern EVs are engineered to perform well in cold climates. Many allow preconditioning—warming the cabin and battery while still plugged in—to maximize winter range.
Charging Your EV
Charging at Home
Most EV owners do the majority of their charging at home. MEC members can charge using:
- Level 1 Charging: Uses a standard 120V outlet; adds 3–5 miles of range per hour.
- Level 2 Charging: Installed 240V equipment; adds 12–30 miles of range per hour and is ideal for overnight charging.
If you’re considering installing a Level 2 charger, MEC can help you understand electrical requirements and assess whether upgrades are needed. In addition, MEC’s ReCHARGE program offers reduced kilowatthour rates for EV charging in exchange for limiting member charging to off-peak hours.
Public Charging Options
Across western Montana, public charging stations are steadily expanding. Many fast chargers (DC Fast Chargers) can refill 60–80% of a battery in about 20–40 minutes. Members traveling across the state will find charging increasingly convenient along major highways and in business centers.

Smart Energy Use
Charging at off-peak times—typically late at night—helps reduce strain on the power grid and keeps energy costs lower for all members. MEC encourages EV owners to take advantage of overnight charging whenever possible. EV owners can enroll in MEC’s ReCHARGE managed EV charging program. Interested in Test Driving an EV?
MEC offers Borrow and Bolt, a free electric vehicle loan program that lets members test-drive a 2022 Chevy Bolt for up to seven days. To participate, members must submit the online inquiry form, after which MEC will confirm reservation dates within 24–48 business hours.
