Are You Prepared for Seasonal Power Outages?

As “Jack Frost” casts his frosty spell over western Montana, the likeliness of seasonal power outages grows. Are you prepared for winter outages? If not, we’re here to help! We’ve compiled a list of important outage preparation tips:

1. Stock up on essentials and ensure you have a well-stocked emergency kit. This should include non-perishable food items, bottled water, flashlights/lanterns, batteries, a first-aid kit, and medication. Remember to have enough supplies to last at least three days.

2. Keep a battery-powered radio on hand for weather-related updates. For widespread power outages, members can visit the Co-op’s website, outage map, and/or Facebook page.

3. Consider investing in a generator to keep essential appliances running. Always operate generators outdoors and follow safety instructions to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

4. If you or a family member relies on powered medical equipment, make arrangements for a backup power supply and have an emergency plan in place. If the need arises, temporarily relocate to a facility with a reliable power source, like a hospital or community center.

5. Check in on your neighbors! Share resources and offer assistance to those in need.

6. Have a communications plan and stay in touch with friends and family. Keep mobile phones and backup battery packs charged.

MEC is dedicated to providing reliable service, but winter weather often presents unforeseen challenges. By taking proactive steps, members can minimize the impact of winter power outages on their households and stay safe, warm and prepared this winter.
