Generlink Transfer Switches

GenerLink™ Transfer Switches

Missoula Electric Cooperative (MEC) does allow the use and installation of GenerLink™ transfer switches for members who wish to connect a portable generator to their home during a power outage.

A GenerLink transfer switch is a meter-mounted device that allows a portable generator to safely supply power to a home without backfeeding electricity onto MEC’s system.

How the GenerLink Installation Process Works

MEC does not sell or install GenerLink units. However, we will facilitate the installation by safely handling our electric meter.

Step 1: Purchase a GenerLink
Members are responsible for selecting and purchasing the correct GenerLink model compatible with their electrical service and generator.

Step 2: Schedule Meter Removal
Once you have received your GenerLink, call Missoula Electric Cooperative to schedule a serviceman to temporarily remove your electric meter.

Step 3: Install the GenerLink
After the meter has been removed by MEC, the GenerLink may be installed by the member or a licensed electrician, following the manufacturer’s instructions and all applicable codes.

Step 4: Meter Reinstallation
Once installation is complete, MEC will return to:

  • Reinstall the electric meter

  • Install the required meter rings and seals

⚠️ Important: Only MEC employees are authorized to remove or reinstall MEC electric meters.

Member Responsibilities

Members using a GenerLink and portable generator are responsible for:

  • Proper selection, installation, and use of the GenerLink transfer switch

  • Managing electrical load to avoid overloading the generator

  • Monitoring voltage levels while operating on generator power

  • Any damage to appliances or equipment caused by improper generator use, low-voltage conditions, or overload situations

  • Ensuring compliance with all local, state, and national electrical codes

Safety, Liability, and Legal Notice

Missoula Electric Cooperative does not sell, endorse, certify, or warranty GenerLink products or portable generators, nor their operation during power outages.

MEC shall not be liable for any damages, losses, or injuries arising from:

  • The installation or use of a GenerLink transfer switch

  • The operation of a portable generator

  • Improper load management or low-voltage conditions

  • Equipment failure or electrical damage on the member’s premises

The member assumes all responsibility and risk associated with the purchase, installation, and operation of a GenerLink transfer switch and portable generator.

Meter Tampering Policy

Only authorized Missoula Electric Cooperative employees may remove or install MEC electric meters.

Any member who removes, or causes a meter to be removed, without MEC authorization and employee assistance will be subject to MEC’s policies and procedures regarding meter tampering, which may include fees, service disconnection, or other corrective actions.
